This book is a study of Anglo-Greek relations in the period from 1935 to 1941. It examines British policy towards Greece, and the influence of Greece’s ‘British connection’ on her internal and external affairs. The Metaxas dictatorship, and British attitudes towards it, are discussed in some detail, as are the Battle of Greece and Anglo-Greek co-operation in the war until the fall of Greece. These, and related subjects, are examined in the light of government and private papers recently made available to public scrutiny. Published sources bearing on Anglo-Greek relations in this period were helpful in examining relations in the years 1940-1; they were of little help in dealing with such controversial topics as the Metaxas dictatorship or British attitudes towards it. The book was submitted to London University in 1972 in fulfilment of the requirements for a Ph.D., but since then it has been radically revised to include a consideration of additional sources of information which were not available earlier.
