Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer is the memoirs of Moxley Sorrel, who served on the staff of General James Longstreet during the Civil War. The book provides insights into life in the Confederacy and offers rare first-hand accounts of battles such as Antietam, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga. Moxley Sorrel is widely considered to have been the Confederate Armies greatest staff officer. The work is one of the finest examples of military literature from any war period.
Sorrel was born in Georgia to a wealthy family. When the Southern States created the Confederacy Sorrel left his job in Savannah and joined the Confederate Army. He quickly rose through the ranks becoming General Longstreets de facto Chief of Staff, and was later promoted to Brigadier General in 1864. Sorrel was wounded at the battles of Petersburg and Hatchers Run. Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer was published posthumously in 1905. =
